顯微鏡可以看到細小的結構，但有其極限。本研究是利用水晶寶寶加入果蠅腦中，再加水使其膨脹十倍，體積增加1000倍。所有的細小結構，都被等方向性的放大，搭配層光顯微鏡的三維成像的效果，可達到超分辨的三度空間解析度。
Microscopes could visualize details but they have limits. The picture shows the Kisses inside the fly brain with the addition of water resulting in 10x expansion, 1000x increase in volume. With an isotropic expansion, the detailed structures could be imaged by lightsheet microscopy in 3D at high resolution.
