此合成圖像融合了從野生型小鼠(綠色)及與記憶形成有關基因(Cpeb3)剔除小鼠(灰白色)的大腦所培養的錐體神經細胞,其樹突上的突出點即為後突觸。細數此結構是因其大小,型態及數目與訊息傳遞及儲存的功能相關。

This composite image combined two confocal micrographs of pyramidal neurons cultured from the cortex of wild-type (in green) and memory-related gene (Cpeb3) knockout (in gray-white) mice. The protruding structures on the dendritic branches represent postsynaptic synapses. Their size, morphology and number are related to information transmission and storage, requiring meticulous counting of these structures.
